Stargazing with Lake City Skies

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 (8:30 PM - 10:30 PM) (MST)

Description

Join Lake City Skies for an evening of spectacular stargazing.

This program starts as the sun is setting at the Windy Point Overlook south of Lake City on Highway 149. As darkness settles in, local starman, Phillip Virden, will point out the different stars, planets, constellations, and more viewed both with the naked eye and through a telescope.

We ask that anyone coming to these sessions dim their car lights when approaching the stargazing site. We recommend you dress warmly, bring additional warm clothing, and something to sit on. A folding chair, light blanket, and hot beverage are good ideas as well. Feel free to bring your telescope and/or binoculars!

These programs are free to the public. However, donations are welcome for the Lake Fork Valley Conservancy for its future astronomical observation site.

Lake City has extraordinary nighttime skies enabling all residents and visitors the opportunity to view the wonders of the universe. 80% of the North American population cannot witness the Milky Way galaxy. In Lake City, we can see our “home galaxy” on a regular basis. Come see the stars in Lake City, Colorado!
