Peniston Park & Earthflow Hike

Elevation: 10,200’ asl
Location: Peniston Park
Difficulty: Easy to moderate – walk along old roads and trails with some uneven terrain at the edges of the wetlands.
Meeting Place: LFVC Office - 8:00 am
Cost: $30.00 (Limited space, call for reservations)
Learn about the ecology of the rare iron fens of Peniston Park. The tour will include a discussion of the unique botany, hydrology, and chemistry of these unique plant assemblages. The tour will also include a short walk onto the Slumgullion Earthflow to stand on one of the most unique geologic features in the world. Bring weather-appropriate clothing and terrain-appropriate footwear, snacks, and plenty of water.

Itinerary:
● 8 am - Meet at the LFVC office at 118 N. Silver St.
● 8:30 am - Carpool to Peniston Park on Highway 149, about 4.4 miles SE of Lake City.
● 12:00 pm - Return to vehicles at Peniston Park and return to Lake City
Driving Directions: The parking area where we begin the hike is 4.4 miles SE of Lake City along Highway 149. There is a dirt road that drops down to a picnic area with plenty of room for parking. There are no public bathrooms here so LFVC will provide wag bags for participants to be disposed of upon return to Lake City.
